Marin Alsop

In September 2007, Marin Alsop was appointed Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. She also serves as the Music Director of California's highly respected Cabrillo Festival, whose focus is new and recently composed classical music.

Before becoming the conductor of the Baltimore Symphony, Marin Alsop held leadership positions with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and the Long Island, Eugene and Colorado Symphony Orchestras. Throughout her career, she's always makes it a point to spend time with young conductors.

Marin Alsop counts her parents and Leonard Bernstein as her primary mentors, and she's continuing that tradition with the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, a program which fosters and encourages women who are training to be conductors. Find out more her work with these young musicians and the Taki Concordia Fellowship at www.takiconcordia.org.

The spoken language of classical music is filled with sometimes complicated foreign names, terms and phrases, like "Allegro con Brio" (Fast with spirit), or "Andante cantabile" (Slow, flowing and songlike). For conductor Marin Alsop, there are even challenges when she speaks English to English speaking orchestras.

Marin Alsop's website tells more of her story, including her innovative approach to concert programming and her dedication to mentoring young conductors www.marinalsop.com.

The music heard here is the Brahms Symphony No. 3 (III) (Naxos 8557430).
