Rolf Smedvig

Rolf Smedvig is the trumpet player and leader of the Empire Brass. Prior to joining the EB, conductor Seiji Ozawa picked him to become the Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1979, he became the orchestra's Principal Trumpet player, a post he held until 1982.

Ask any trumpet player, and they’ll tell you they practically put their life on the line every time they play those acrobatic high notes in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. Rolf Smedvig remembers one unhappy incident involving those high, high notes. First, cellist Matt Haimovitz remembers the time he played a Bach Cello Suite in a trendy bistro while people listened and ate their meal.
