More than 350 musicians are heard on a recent recording of the Mahler Symphony No. 8 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Mahler may call for large musical forces, but Michael Tilson Thomas (aka MTT) says Mahler doesn't always want them all to play forcefully. He had to find new ways to tell the orchestra to "Ssssshhhhhh."
